Manufacturing Process Overview

Sand Casting

Form a sand mold around a pattern, pour metal, then break out the casting.

Advantages
  • Flexible for large geometries
  • Lower tooling cost than die casting
  • Wide alloy possibilities
Limitations
  • Coarser surfaces and tolerances vs die casting/CNC
  • More machining stock often required
  • Labor and variability depend on foundry practice
How it works
  1. Build pattern and mold
  2. Pour molten metal
  3. Shake out and remove gates
  4. Heat treat/machine as required

Typical fit: Large metal parts and lower-volume housings/frames
